Green Building
Contrary to what we know from listening to Kermit the Frog, being (and building) “Green” is easier than you might think.
For example, here are a few green practices in place at Economy Lumber Company:
- Our products are primarily from forests in Canada, Oregon, and California all managed under some of the world’s most stringent sustainability practices.
- Wood scraps are collected into a large wood bin for recycling.
- Downfall wood is remanufactured into other products thereby reducing waste.
- Cans, bottles, paper, metal bands, and plastic unit wrappers and bands are collected and recycled.
- We use thermostats for energy efficient heat-pumps which are electronic and programmable, thereby reducing energy consumption.
- Our store has skylights which reduce the need for interior lighting.
- Exterior night-time lighting fixtures use CFL (compact fluorescent) bulbs wherever possible.
- All computer monitors are turned off each night and non-essential computers are also shut down each night.
- Copy machines are placed into “energy saver” mode each night.
- Economy Lumber Company has recently completed an audit for certification by both the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).

Presently, there are many agencies and standards all clamoring for the green spotlight. At this time, there is no national, state, or even county standard governing all things involved in green building. Below are some links to various green players. We hope we can be a source of information for you and any green projects or questions you may have.
