Can Vinyl Be Too Final?
Posted: January 1, 2012Ironicaly, the fact that vinyl fencing can last so long can actually become a drawback. What happens if the homeowner simply gets tired of looking at the same thing year after year? With wood, the problem is not so bad because repairs and paint jobs are also opportunities to try something different -- maybe a new style of rail or spindle, or just a new color of paint.
If the homeowner had made a safe choice when the vinyl fencing was first installed, such as classic white, for example, then the issue is somewhat minor. However, if color choices were made that are no longer desired, then what can they do? The 3 basic choices are:
Live with it.
This is the cheapest and easiest choice. If the physical condition of the fencing is not an issue, than leave it be. It's simply doing what it was designed to do, which is last. To dress things up, maybe some landscaping in front of the fence or decorative vines alongside would do the trick.
Paint it.
One of the greatest benefits of vinyl is that it never requires painting -- not that you can't paint it, however. It's just that vinyl is designed not to need it. Manufacturers recommend using an epoxy-based paint and most warn that it will void the warranty. Also bear in mind that once painted, an ongoing process of maintenance will have begun as if it were a wood fence. All those things considered, it would still be cheaper than replacing the fence completely.
Replace it.
Maybe the homeowner just can't stand to look at the same boring fence any more. There have been many advancements in vinyl fencing, in terms of color and style choices over the past few years. Maybe it's just time to try something new, even if the old fence is fine. If the upkeep of a new paint job is still too much of a bother, then why not just start over?
